Redskins 2018 NFL Draft: 04/26/2018
With the No. 13-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft the Redskins selected defensive lineman Da’Ron Payne.
According to his Alabama profile, the 6-foot-2, 311 pounder had 45 of his 53 tackles during the 2017 season against the run.
Da’Ron Payne played in 44 games at Alabama from 2015-17. Payne recorded 102 tackles (39 solo), 5.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, 5 pass breakups, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 forced fumble and 1 interception. Payne contributed significantly to Alabama defense that assisted the team qualify for three consecutive College Football Playoff National Championship berths, including titles following the 2015 and 2017 campaigns.
In the 2017 season
53 tackles (21 solo), 3 pass breakups, 1 fumble recovery, 1 sack, 1 interception and 1 offensive touchdown in 14 games, earning first-team All-SEC honors from the Associated Press.
Payne had his first career interception in the Sugar Bowl and returned it 21 yards and finished it off with a one-yard touchdown reception in the next drive. He was awarded Defensive MVP honors in both the Sugar Bowl and the College Football Playoff National Championship.
36 tackles (12 solo), 1.5 sacks and one pass breakup in 15 games.
He also scored the first touchdown of his collegiate career at Ole Miss on a three-yard return of a fumble.
As a freshman he had 13 tackles (six solo), a half-sack and a forced fumble in all 15 games.
“Just a relentless lineman,” he said. “I’m going to get after the pass rush and just dominate the run every chance I get.”
On his time speaking with the redskins prior to draft:
“I love the Washington Redskins,” he said. “I just liked the vibe I got when I got down there. It was just like a real family, so I’m pumped about that.”
Redskins 2018 NFL Draft: 04/27/2018
After a trade with the 49ers, moving Washington back to the No. 59-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Redskins selected LSU running back Derrius Guice in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
In three seasons with the Tigers, Guice carried the ball 471 times for 3,074 yards and 29 touchdowns along with 32 receptions for 250 yards and three receiving touchdowns.
