Super Bowl XXII was won by NFC champion Washington Redskins 42-10 over AFC champion Denver Broncos.

touchdown pass to wide receiver Ricky Nattiel on beginning play from scrimmage. Then Rich Karlis kicked a 24-yard field goal following a seven-play, 61-yard scoring drive.

The Redskins then scored 35 unanswered points on five straight possessions in the second period. The 35 points became an NFL postseason record for most points in a period.

Redskins QB Doug Williams led the second-period attack by passing for a Super Bowl record-tying four touchdowns, along with 80- and 50-yard passes to wide receiver Ricky Sanders, a 27-yard to wide receiver Gary Clark, and an 8-yard pass to tight end Clint Didier…..

Washington scored five touchdowns in 18 plays in 5:47 total time of possession. In all, Williams completed 18 of 29 passes for 340 yards and was named the game’s MVP.

Sanders finished with 193 yards on nine catches to break the Super Bowl X record of 161 yards set by Lynn Swann of Pittsburgh Steelers.

The game’s leading rusher, Rookie running back Timmy Smith, had 22 carries for a Super Bowl-record 204 yards, breaking the previous record of 191 yards by Marcus Allen of the Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII. Smith also scored two times on  58 and 4 yard runs.

Super Bowl XXII (summary) –  How It Happened:

1st Quarter

1:57: John Elway threw 56-yard TD pass to Ricky Nattiel, Rich Karlis kicked the extra point to give Broncos 7-0 lead.

5:51  Rich Karlis kicked a 24 yard field goal to extend Broncos lead to 10-0.

2nd Quarter

0:53: Doug Williams threw an 80 yard pass to Ricky Sanders, Haji-Sheikh made the PAT  to make it 10-7 Broncos.

4:45: Gary Clark caught a 27 yard touchdown pass from D. Williams, Haji-Sheikh PAT  made it 14-10 Redskins.

8:33: Timmy Smith 58 yard TD run and Haji-Sheikh PAT extended Redskins lead to 21-10.

11:18: Ricky Sanders caught a 50 yard TD pass from D. Williams, and Haji-Sheikh PAT made it 28-10 Redskins.

13:56: Clint Didier 8 yard TD pass from D. Williams, and Haji-Sheikh PAT made it 35-10.

4th Quarter

1:51: Smith 4 yard TD run, and Haji-Sheikh kick brought the final score to 42-10.

Redskin’s 6 touchdowns and 602 total yards were Super Bowl records. Redskins cornerback Barry Wilburn had 2 of the Skin’s 3 interceptions, and strong safety Alvin Walton had 2 of Washington’s 5 sacks. Head Coach, Joe Gibbs, did a brilliant job guiding The Redskins to victory.
